Now that it is well established that Meditation act as a Divine Medicine to overcome stress, insomania, psychological problems, depression and many other health problems SOHAM took a lead in introducing Meditation as a starter in all its development acativities. While introducing any programme, a training, a focus group discussion (FGD), any talk we start the session with a silence of some minutes and then proceed to main course.
Indian association of Muscular Distrophy was first to identityfy this uniqueness of SOHAM. President Ms. Sanjana Goyal a President winner Awardee has called SOHAM personnels to introduce Meditation at their annual 3 days camp of Muscular distrophy held in 2006. Patients from across the country have participated in it. Every single patient has taken an oath to introduce Meditaion in their regular practices. They found it innovative, relaxing and a will power booster in their regular routines.
Shimla University regularly conducts training for their Educational Staff who needs to be promoted to their next level of Promotion. SOHAM personnels were called up to take up a session with them using Meditation as a focus. SOHAM introduced its programme with all the lecturars and asked them to make it a class room activity with every student. Department of Psycology regulary takes services of SOHAM for introducing Meditation to its students through the sessiosn on Self Manangement.
On a project of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, SOHAM along with Department of Psycology, Shimla University has visited Balgrahs of Tutikandi, Mashobra, and Rampur and had introduced Meditation as the regular activitity in their routines. The project consisted to make “A study on the existing conditions of the inmates of Balgrahs of Himachal Pradesh and identify gaps for further improving their mental status.” It has brought a drastic change in the attitude of the Staff of these Balgrahs in dealing with the inmates due to increased senstivity.
SOHAM has been called at Kumb Mela in Allahabad in a programme organised by Kamla Nehru Hospital of Allahabad. Session has dealt with the extreme groups like old people, destitute ladies, psychological patients and persons living with HIV/ AIDS in UP and found that the strength, will power, and health status of the people has improved or remained maintained at a longer period of their stay.
SOHAM took several sessions with Red Ribbon Clubs of State AIDS Control Society in whole of Himachal Pradesh. In Hamirpur, Bilaspur and Shimla SOHAM took regular sessions on teaching Life Skills Education Programme to all the leaders of Nehru Yuva Kendras. It has introduced Meditation to all the young and energetic youth of Himachal Pradesh through Life Skills Education
Executive Director, SOHAM Sh. Daman Ahuja has the privledge of associating himself purely on independent basis as a Development Professional as its National Incharge, Field planning- Red Ribbon Express in all its three phases. Though it has no direct association with SOHAM at all but the experience of him being exposed to rich heritage of our country has automatically enriched SOHAM
Red Ribbon Express hails as the largest mass mobilisation campaign against HIV/AIDS in the world. A train with 8 activity coaches comprising, exhibition, training, counselling and HIV testing services has traversed across the length and breadth of our country. It’s field planning was considered a uphill task as to organise meetings not only at the National Level but at State, district and at the Station level also. It required a strong coordination between various departments as to mobilize crowd specially women and youth which were considered more vulnerable with in the overall scenario of HIV/AIDS. The project field planning was considered to be the life line of this mega project which was sucessfully executed.
The project conceptualised by the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation was implemented jointly with the Ministry of Railways and other key government ministries including Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Rural Development, Human Resource Development, Women & Child Development, Social Justice & Empowerment, Panchayati Raj and Youth Affairs and non-governmental partners. The vision was to facilitate multi-sectoral effort by which HIV could be mainstreamed within the context of the overall socio-economic development rather than merely treating it as a medical issue.
The train has been flagged off by Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, UPA chair person, and Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav, the Railway Minister, on 1st December, 2007 on World AIDS day from Delhi Safdarjung Railway Station in its first Phase, by Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, UPA Chairperson and Ms. Mamta Benerjee, the Railway Minister and Mr.Gulam Nabi Azad, Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare in its second phase. The third phase of Red Ribbon Express train campaign was flagged off by Hon’ble Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India in the presence of dignitaries including Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi and Hon’ble Union Minister of Railways on 12.01.2012. In it s third phase the renewed focus of the RRE project was on youth. Special efforts were made for mobilizing adolescents and youth. The project was run by National AID Control Organization, Rajiv Gandhi Foundation and Ministry of Youth and Sports, and it is supported by Unicef. The train has reached to 62 lakh s of people in its Ist phase, more than 80 lakhs in its II phase and it has already crossed 60 lakhs till July, 2012 touching almost more than 50000 villages in each of its phases.
SOHAM is providing consultancy to various organizations at a locally and National Level, for executing School AIDS education Program. It has participated in various workshops all over the country organized by various organisations on different aspects of HIV/AIDS.
SOHAM has taken Meditative sessions with HIV + people's Network to increase their coping skills with regards to depression, stigma, physical health and Social Environment through out the country.
During its year long tenure at PGIMER, Chandigarh SOHAM Executive Director has introduced the session on Self Management and the Role of Meditation at the State Training and Resource Centre in all its trainings of Target Intervention Project (TI projects of NACO) personnels of Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh. SOHAM strongly believes that the SELF AWARENESS generated through meditational sessions at various training programmes can act as a deterant to the whole issue of HIV/AIDS in new infections.
